What Are Pulseras?
"Pulsera" is the Spanish word for bracelet. Traveling in Nicaragua before the Pulsera Project was born, hand-woven pulseras were a part of everyday life to us - they were sold on the streets, in the markets, by vendors in the central squares, and at first we thought nothing of it.
It wasn't until we received pulseras as gifts from some shelter youths that the pulsera world really opened up to us. We began to see the pulseras as a positive way for young Nicaraguan to put their minds to work creating art while keeping their minds off of the streets and their tragic pasts. The pulseras also added a concrete element to our growing concept of a mutual cultural exchange between North America and Nicaragua. With each pulsera given and received, everyone involved was adding a little color to the world, in more ways than one.
We've grown a lot since that first trip, but the heart of our project remains the same. We now support nearly 100 Nicaraguan artisans who weave many different styles of pulseras, each one a reminder of the beautiful things that can come from the dark.
