Pulsera Project Funds Opening of New Si a La Vida Shelter
Students and student groups in 140 US schools are now part of the Pulsersa Project. With such phenomenal student support, the project continues supporting the Si a La Vida shelters for ex-street kids, but we’'ve also been able to extended support in amazing ways.Last year, a generous Si a La Vida donor supplied funding to build a new dormitory to double capacity at the Si a La Vida shelter; there was always a long waiting list of street children but the shelter was always full. Construction was completed in December, but Si a La Vida lacked funding to staff or operate the new shelter, so the shelter remained unopened. In January, the shelter opened with funding from the Pulsera Project – with proceeds from US pulsera sales. Project money is being used to hire staff and to buy food and other necessities for the new shelter which will eventually house 25 kids.
Juan Carlos Mayorga Garcia Receives The First Project Scholarship
It’'s not a misprint.... –tuition at a public university in Nicaragua costs about $40 a month. But, in a country where most people live on less than $2 a day, attending a university is little more than a dream for most; people must work to barely survive.
A former street kid himself, Juan Carlos leads the Pulsera Project’'s co-op of 20 ex-Los Quinchos youths, and he has just enrolled in Ave Maria University in San Marcos, one of the most renowned universities in Nicaragua. Tuition is $45 a month. The Pulsera Project pays all of his educational expenses. Juan Carlos is currently working with the rest of the co-op members to get their paperwork and academic records in order so that after US pulsera sales end in June and additional funding is available, all co-op members can enroll in a university or technical school of their choice and the project will pay their expenses.
