The Pulsera Co-Op
By the age of 17, kids who have lived in shelters like Los Quinchos and Si A La Vida are required by law to leave and start a life on their own. Finding jobs, money, and education can be nearly impossible for many of these young adults, and many eventually end up back on the streets.
Recently the Pulsera Project established an artisan's cooperative that will offer a more colorful future to these talented and hardworking Nicaraguans. The new co-op provides employment to 21 young men and women who now have the opportunity to continue making the beautiful pulseras that form the foundation of our project, while receiving scholarships and working among a supportive community of friends and peers. Perhaps most importantly, the proceeds from their pulseras will continue to help children who are rescued from the same tragic pasts that the co-op members have put behind them.
The Pulsera co-op also takes trips within Nicaragua to learn about new initiatives such as solar energy, sustainable living, and cooperatvie farming that will eventually be implemented into the the structure of the Co-Op.
The Pulsera Co-Op is still in its early stages, but expect great things to come out of it (including some incredible new pulsera styles!) in the next few months.
Juan Carlos Mayorga is the leader of the Pulsera Project's Artisans Co-Op in Granada.
